Acid and Metalliferous Drainage (AMD) or Acid Rock Drainage (ARD) represents the single biggest environmental issue facing the mining industry worldwide.  The issue can become particularly problematic post mine closure.  Unfortunately, treatment of mine drainage in perpetuity is becoming a more routine solution to this problem.  The purpose of forums such as the Australian AMD Workshop is to discuss, devise and implement proactive strategies for minimising and avoiding AMD during mining operations, so that unpalatable options such as treatment in perpetuity can be avoided.
