Dr Marilena Stimpfl

2025 AMD Workshop Presentation Title: AMD management through mine planning and selective material handling
Dr Marilena Stimpfl is BHP’s Geo-Environmental Superintended working across BMA and WAIO assets. She has 18 years’ experience in management of geochemical risk and beneficial waste associated with mined and processed materials (ie waste rock and tailings), both as a consultant and an industry professional. In her role she and her team, are responsible for managing geochemical risks (including acid and metalliferous drainage) across all stages of the life of mine; integrate waste management strategies into functional and operational plans and processes; enable operations meet regulatory and progressive closures requirements, and support delivery of geochemically sustainable PMLU. Marilena started her journey at BHP in 2019 and has overseen the implementation of BHP Mined Material Management standard across WAIO and BMA, assist deliver progressive rehabilitation and closure plans in Queensland (geochemical aspects), improved geochemical knowledge base with regards to environmental geochemistry of coal tailings and spoil piles, and is currently supporting a variety of projects aimed at identifying closure strategies for WAIO and BMA legacy landforms.
